Hybrid Dentures

Getting dentures can seem like the solution to your dental problems, but it can start to get tiring when they start moving around your mouth when you speak and chew. Fortunately, there is a solution! Hybrid dentures are secured to sturdy dental implants, these implants act as artificial tooth roots and won’t move or shift in your mouth. If you’re interested in hybrid dentures, call Rotary Way Oral Surgery and book your appointment today!

How are hybrid dentures different from traditional dentures?

Traditional dentures are removable and usually are adhered to your gums with adhesive this can cause you problems when eating and drinking and have to take time every morning to put them on and mess with them throughout the day. You may also notice that dentures cause you to slur your words; to top it all off, jaw shape changes, so you’ll have to get refitted every few years.

Now compare that to hybrid dentures. Hybrid dentures are attached securely to dental implants. These act as artificial tooth roots that don’t move around in your mouth. You don’t have to take them out ever, they are in your mouth permanently. And since your implants stimulate your jawbone, you won’t experience bone loss like traditional denture wearers.

There are many benefits of hybrid dentures including:

  • Clean just like you would natural teeth
  • Won’t slip
  • Better speech
  • Better chewing ability
  • Stimulates your jaw so you won’t lose bone density

What’s the process for getting hybrid dentures?

There are only three steps involved in getting hybrid dentures. During your first appointment, your Rotary Way Oral Surgery provider will extract any remaining teeth that may get in the way of your dentures.

After waiting a few weeks to allow for healing, your surgeon will implant small titanium rods into your jawbone that will act as artificial tooth roots. For a full set of hybrid dentures, usually, four implants are needed. Each case is different, and your Rotary Way Oral Surgery provider will provide you with your details for your personal case.

Once implants are installed you will need to wait three to six months while they fuse with your jawbone to provide the sturdy foundation for your hybrid dentures. After they finish fusing, your dentist will then attach your new hybrid dentures, which have been created and modified to perfectly fit your mouth.

How should I care for my hybrid dentures?

The best thing about choosing hybrid dentures is the ease of care. Treating them just like you would with your natural teeth, brushing twice a day. Just make sure you use non-abrasive toothpaste to ensure the dentures look the best and last the longest. And don’t forget to brush the acrylic gum part of the dentures as well.

Comparing traditional dentures with hybrid dentures, hybrid dentures are much easier to take care of. Whereas traditional dentures need to be taken out each night and soaked in a solution, hybrid dentures are permanently in your mouth.

With proper care and regular dentist visits, hybrid dentures can last indefinitely.

How should I care for my hybrid dentures?

Caring for hybrid dentures is just like caring for your normal teeth. You should follow a routine of brushing twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, cleaning both the teeth and the acrylic gum. Flossing is important too, to remove the bacteria that builds up between the teeth. Gum disease is still a risk even with hybrid dentures. Finally, you must continue to go to the dentist for regular check-ups on your overall oral health. Compared with traditional dentures, caring for dental hybrids is a much easier option as you don’t need to be concerned about learning any cleaning routines or use any special solutions.

What is a non-abrasive toothpaste?

A non-abrasive toothpaste is a toothpaste with low levels of abrasion elements. All toothpaste contains some level of abrasion as it’s needed to remove plaque from teeth. The level of abrasion is indicated on the packaging by a value of RDA. Non-abrasive toothpaste is considered to have an RDA value of anywhere between 0 and 70.

How long do hybrid dentures last?

If you take good care of your hybrid dentures, they should last indefinitely. This makes them a much more cost-effective option than traditional dentures as they usually have a lifespan of about 5 to 8 years.

Is the surgery required for hybrid dentures painful?

Your surgeon will provide the needed medication to make the fitting of hybrid dentures as pain-free as possible. You will receive a local anesthetic where the implants will be inserted so that you will be pain-free during the surgery. If you worry about being anxious during the surgery then you can receive sedation such as laughing gas. Sedation can put you in a twilight state. Before your surgery, you will have an opportunity to explain your specific needs as a patient. The surgeons at Rotary Way Oral Surgery will provide you a customized plan of medication for your comfort.

Dentures are not the cause of bone loss in the jawbone. However, if you are missing teeth then the jaw bone will lack the needed stimulation to regenerate and stay strong. Dentures do not provide the stimulation needed to the jaw bone and it can become weaker and you will see bone loss. Hybrid implant dentures are different because the implant into the jawbone will give stimulation to the jawbone.
